What is musculoskeletal physiotherapy?

Musculoskeletal (MSK) physiotherapy is the treatment of a wide range of injuries, disorders and diseases that affect joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons. Sports injuries, joint pain, complex pain conditions such as arthritis and problems after some surgical procedures are examples of issues that musculoskeletal physiotherapy can help treat.

Whether your injury, aches and pains are new or longstanding our Physiotherapists are specially trained to deliver the very best treatment approaches to help you get better including:

Exercise therapy

Physiotherapists use exercise to help patients improve movement, flexibility and strength to reduce pain in both the short and long term. Nuffield Health Physiotherapists are trained to ensure every patient receives the right exercise program and they will support you to learn and carry out the program to make sure you get the most from your treatment.

Aqua Therapy

Aquatic therapy (or Hydrotherapy) involves exercise and rehabilitation in water. This is an effective way of assisting muscle and joint rehabilitation (and alleviating other conditions) in an environment that helps to relax and support the body’s weight.

As well as assisting with movement, Hydrotherapy can provide pain relief in some patients as well. Hydrotherapy patients do not need to be able to swim (although it would be beneficial to inform your physiotherapist of this in advance).

Joint mobilisation & soft tissue techniques

Hands-on treatment to joints and muscles can help reduce pain and allow the body to start to move more freely. Physiotherapists may use these techniques on patients alongside other treatment approaches such as exercise therapy to help patients get better quicker.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture refers to the insertion of sterile, single-use needles into specific points of the body to help relieve pain and symptoms. All Nuffield Health Physiotherapists delivering acupuncture have undertaken specialist training in this area.

What Will An MSK Physiotherapy Treatment Be Like?

After we have taken all your details we look at reaching a diagnosis. Your posture, movement, muscle length, strength and a variety of special tests will be carried out to identify the cause and any contributing factors. Once a diagnosis is reached we will work together to create a tailored plan to get you back on track. This may include a number of varied techniques which are listed below or indeed one treatment that is consistent until we reach a milestone where we can readdress your treatment plan.

Tailored plans involve complete specialist guidance while meeting your personal input as a priority. The programme is put together with goals and milestones which we can reach together in a timely but relaxed manner. At Clearcut Physiotherapy, 95% of the treatments we use are manual therapy based. This means treatment can be completed in your own home if this is where you would feel more comfortable.

Occasionally you will be referred to a consultant if further investigations are necessary.

All the techniques we use are evidence-based and include:

  • Exercise therapy
  • Soft tissue mobilisation
  • Muscle energy technique
  • Deep tissue massage
  • Graston Technique
  • Joint mobilisations
  • Acupuncture
  • Dry/Wet Cupping
  • Spinal manipulations and adjustments
